This year, we are offering summer classes at 3 locations for students who wish to further their dance technique and knowledge. Whether you choose to enroll to further your dance training or explore a new extracurricular activity, we welcome all students to learn at the official school of the Ballet Theatre of Maryland.

What classes do we offer?

Creative Movement 1 Tots: Ages 3 - 4

This class is designed with the very young dancer in mind. It encourages natural dance movement, including stretching, music appreciation, and coordination. In a stimulating environment, the class focuses on creativity, group interaction, and the joy of self-expression.

Creative Movement 2 Ballet Storytime: Ages 4 - 5

This class is an imaginative continuation of Creative Movement 1 - focusing on self-expression, creativity and flexibility of movement, and encouraging self-confidence. Students are introduced to the concepts of basic movement, rhythms and music for ballet, and exploration of themselves by focusing on different ballet story themes such as Cinderella, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and more!

Creative Movement 2 Ballet and Tap Combo: Ages 4 - 5

In this class, children are introduced to the concepts of creative movement and musicality for ballet and tap. In a stimulating environment, the class focuses on group interaction, coordination, rhythms, and the joy of movement and self-expression.

Conservatory students in Creative Movement

Beginning Teen/Adult Ballet: Ages 13+

This class is an introduction to the art of Classical Ballet for the novice, including the basic positions of the arms and feet, the basic exercises of the ballet barre and center, plus exercises for strength and flexibility. This class is a great way to work our the the dance enthusiast.

Continuing Beginner Teen/Adult Ballet: Ages 13+

This class is an extension of the introduction to the art of Classical Ballet, including barre, center, and stretch exercises. Some previous training is recommended or by permission of the instructor.

Intermediate/Advanced Teen/Adult Ballet: Ages 16+

This class includes barre, center, and stretching exercises for adult/teen students with previous training. Pre-requisite: two or more years of previous training or by permission of the instructor.

Classical Ballet 1: Ages 6 - 7

This class is a continuation of Pre-Ballet, with a special focus on increased exercises for strength, coordination, flexibility, and alignment. Rhythmic movement and music are emphasized and the Classical Ballet vocabulary and basic positions are further introduced.

Classical Ballet 2: Ages 8+

At this level, students should take 2 technique classes per week. This class is the beginning of formalized Classical Ballet. Class focuses include learning the sequence of working at the barre, a continuation of learning steps in the center, and stretching exercises. Musicality, coordination, and movement dynamics are concentrated on to help the dancer create a strong foundation for dance.

Adaptive Dance: Movement Exploration and Ballet Fundamentals: Age 10+

The Ballet Theatre of Maryland believes in providing everyone with access and opportunity to explore movement and dance. Our Adaptive Dance Program is an inclusive class that specializes in meeting the needs of individuals with mental and/or physical disabilities. This class promotes self-expression, enhances spatial awareness, improves motor skills and coordination, and fosters cooperation and collaboration all while building a strong community. Students can expect to explore creative movement and learn the fundamentals of Classical Ballet. At the start of the first class, parents/caretakers will have the opportunity to disclose information to the instructor about the student's disabilities/specific needs as a form of awareness to cater best to each student.

Conservatory student in Creative Movement

All Styles Sampler (Ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop, & Tap) for Ages 4-6

This class is designed to introduce your child to a variety of dance styles and techniques. This class will increase your child's dancing ability in ballet and hip-hop to cultivate a versatile performer and prepare them for the next step to individual classes.

Classical Ballet: To learn the language of dance, work on refining basic locomotive skills, and encourage self-expression through movement.

Jazz: To learn movement dynamics, coordination, musicality, style, and self-expression.

Hip-Hop: To learn basic coordination skills and work on putting combinations to different rhythms of music.

Tap: To learn basic rhythms, syncopation, and coordination skills.
