We offer Conservatory classes in both Annapolis and Grasonville with a total of 3 locations to best accommodate all families in the surrounding area. We offer the best possible quality instruction by professionally trained and educated teachers in ballet, tap, jazz, modern, creative movement, and adaptive dance.

Creative Movement 1 Tots: Ages 3 - 4 (Maryland Hall)

This class is designed with the very young dancer in mind. It encourages natural dance movement, including stretching, music appreciation, and coordination. In a stimulating environment, the class focuses on creativity, group interaction, and the joy of self-expression.

Creative Movement 2 Ballet Storytime: Ages 4 - 5 (Maryland Hall)

This class is an imaginative continuation of Creative Movement 1 - focusing on self-expression, creativity and flexibility of movement, and encouraging self-confidence. Students are introduced to the concepts of basic movement, rhythms and music for ballet, and exploration of themselves by focusing on different ballet story themes such as Cinderella, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and more!

Creative Movement 2 Balle/Tap Combo: Ages 4 - 5 (Maryland Hall)

In this class, children are introduced to the concepts of creative movement and musicality for ballet and tap. In a stimulating environment, the class focuses on group interaction, coordination, rhythms, and the joy of movement and self-expression.

Creative Movement 3 Ballet/Tap Combo: Ages 5 - 7 (Maryland Hall)

This class is a continuation of Creative Movement 2. With an emphasis on tap, including some ballet exercises for strengthening, flexibility, and posturing, this class focuses on building upon basic tap and ballet steps, coordination, creativity, group interaction, and the joy of self-expression.

Beginning Teen/Adult Ballet (Maryland Hall)

This class is an introduction to the art of Classical Ballet for the novice, including the basic positions of the arms and feet, the basic exercises of the ballet barre and center, plus exercises for strength and flexibility. This class is a great way to work our the the dance enthusiast.

Continuing Beginner Teen/Adult Ballet (Maryland Hall)

This class is an extension of the introduction to the art of Classical Ballet, including barre, center, and stretch exercises. Some previous training is recommended or by permission of the instructor.

Intermediate/Advanced Teen/Adult Ballet (Merritt Annex & Maryland Hall)

This class includes barre, center, and stretching exercises for adult/teen students with previous training. Pre-requisite: two or more years of previous training or by permission of the instructor.

Lyrical Jazz 1/2: For Classical Ballet Levels 2, 3, & 4 OR by placement (Merritt Annex)

This class is designed to be a beginning-level class where the dancers will learn the basic principals of Jazz. Movement dynamics, isolating different parts of the body, coordination, musicality, style, and self-expression are all fundamental elements of this class.

Lyrical Jazz 3/4: For Classical Ballet Levels 5 & 6 OR by placement (Merritt Annex)

This class builds upon the principals learned in Jazz 1/2 and is designed with a more intermediate to advanced dancer in mind. Movement dynamics, coordination, musicality, style, and self-expression are build upon in addition to learning new advanced steps and skills.

Classical Ballet 1: Ages 6 - 7 (Maryland Hall)

This class is a continuation of Pre-Ballet, with a special focus on increased exercises for strength, coordination, flexibility, and alignment. Rhythmic movement and music are emphasized and the Classical Ballet vocabulary and basic positions are further introduced.

Classical Ballet 2: Ages 8 - 9 (Maryland Hall)

At this level, students should take 2 technique classes per week. This class is the beginning of formalized Classical Ballet. Class focuses include learning the sequence of working at the barre, a continuation of learning steps in the center, and stretching exercises. Musicality, coordination, and movement dynamics are concentrated on to help the dancer create a strong foundation for dance.

Classical Ballet 3: Ages 9 - 12 (Merritt Annex)

At this level, registration in 2 technique classes per week is required and a third is included in tuition and encouraged. This level is a continuation of Classical Ballet 2 beginner/intermediate material including barre, center, and pre-pointe exercises. Coordination and musicality concepts are further explored and a special emphasis is placed on body alignment.

Classical Ballet 4: Ages 10 - 14 (Merritt Annex)

At this level, registration in three technique classes per week is required. This level is a continuation of Classical Ballet 3, including intermediate material at the barre, in the center, and pre-pointe/demi-pointe exercises. Dancers will be challenged with new material and continue to make progress through the syllabus.

Classical Ballet 4 Pre/Demi Pointe: Ages 10 - 14 (Merritt Annex)

In this class, students begin preparing the legs and feet for pointe work through a combination of pre-pointe appropriate physical therapy (PT) exercises and ballet technique. Students will continue to work with TheraBand and other PT props to strengthen the appropriate muscles in the legs, feet, back, and abdominals to prepare students anatomically for pointe shoes.

Classical Ballet 5: Ages 13+ (Merritt Annex)

At this level, registration in four technique classes per week is required and a fifth is included in tuition and encouraged. This level is a continuation of Classical Ballet 4, including intermediate/advanced material at the barre, in the center, and conditioning exercises. Emphasis is placed on proper alignment, sculpting the legs and feet, and anatomically building both endurance and stamina for executing advanced pre-professional class work.

Classical Ballet 6: Ages 14+ (Merritt Annex)

At this level, registration in five technique classes per week is required and a sixth is included in tuition and encouraged. This level is a continuation of Classical Ballet 5, including intermediate/advanced material at the barre, in the center, and conditioning exercises. Special emphasis is placed on building strength and speed for petite and grandé allegro, grandé turns, refining linking or transition steps, perfecting technique and developing artistry to bridge the gap between the advanced student and pre-professional training.

Classical Ballet 5 and Classical Ballet 6 Pointe (Merritt Annex)

Registration for this class requires pre-approval from the Conservatory Principal. Please contact the Conservatory for more information regarding this class.

Musical Theatre Tap 1/2: Ages 8+ or by placement (Merritt Annex)

This class is designed to be a beginning level class where the dancers will learn the basic principals of Tap. The class is build on coordination, rhythms, syncopation, and musicality while combining Musical Theater techniques and choreography to the sounds.

Musical Theatre Tap 3/4: Ages 13+ or by placement (Merritt Annex)

This class builds upon the principles learned in Tap 1/2 and is designed with a more intermediate to advanced tapper in mind. The class is built on coordination, rhythms, syncopation, and musicality while combining Musical Theater techniques and choreography to the sounds.

Adaptive Dance: Movement Exploration and Ballet Fundamentals: Age 6+
(Maryland Hall)

The Ballet Theatre of Maryland believes in providing everyone with access and opportunity to explore movement and dance. Our Adaptive Dance Program is an inclusive class that specializes in meeting the needs of individuals with cognitive and/or physical disabilities. This class promotes self-expression, enhances spatial awareness, improves motor skills and coordination, and fosters cooperation and collaboration all while building a strong community. Students can expect to explore creative movement and learn the fundamentals of Classical Ballet. At the start of the first class, parents/caretakers will have the opportunity to disclose information to the instructor about the student's disabilities/specific needs as a form of awareness to cater best to each student.

Beginning Jazz/Hip-Hop: Ages 7 - 9

This class provides a fun-filled, high-energy environment designed to teach dancers fundamental Jazz and Hip-Hop techniques and vocabulary. A focus on musicality, strengthening, and stretching is emphasized to help create a well-rounded dancer.

Intermediate Jazz/Hip-Hop: Ages 10 - 14

This class is designed with a more intermediate dancer in mind to teach fundamental Jazz and Hip-Hop techniques and vocabulary. Movement dynamics, coordination, musicality, style, and self-expression are focuses in addition to learning new steps and skills.

Advanced Jazz/Hip-Hop: Ages 15+

This class is designed with an advanced dancer with previous Jazz and/or Hip-Hop experience in mind. Dancers will continue to learn different movement dynamics, increase coordination, musicality, style, and self-expresion while learning new steps and skills.

Beginning Contemporary: Ages 8 - 12

In this class, students will learn the basic principles of contemporary dance. This style blends movements and techniques from various dance styles including ballet, jazz, and modern, and places emphasis on innovation, musicality, strength, and flexibility. Taking at least one weekly ballet class in conjunction with this class is suggested.

Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary: Ages 13+

In this class, students will continue learning and building upon the principles of contemporary dance. This style blends movements and techniques from various dance styles including ballet, jazz, and modern placing emphasis on innovation, musicality, strength, and flexibility. Taking at least one weekly ballet class in conjunction with this class is suggested.

Beginning Ballet: Ages 7 - 9

This class is the beginning of formalized classical ballet including barre, center, and stretching exercises. Musicality, coordination, and movement dynamics are concentrated on to help the dancer create a strong foundation for dance.

Intermediate Ballet: Ages 10 - 14

This level is a continuation of Beginning Ballet including barre, center, and pre-pointe exercises. Coordination and musicality concepts are explored further and a special emphasis is placed on body alignment. At this level, taking 2 ballet classes a week is strongly encouraged.

Intermediate Pre-Pointe

Advanced Ballet: Ages 15+

This level is a continuation of Intermediate Ballet including barre, center, and conditioning exercises. Emphasis is placed on proper alignment, sculpting the legs and feet, and anatomically building both endurance and stamina for executing advanced class work. At this level, taking 3 ballet classes a week is strongly encouraged.

Advanced Pre-Pointe/Pointe

Registration for this class requires pre-approval from the Conservatory Principal. Please contact the Conservatory for more information regarding this class.

Lyrical Ballet: Ages 9+

This class focuses on movement based on a blend of elements and movements from ballet, jazz, modern, and contemporary dance styles. These movements are generally more fluid and smooth teaching dancers how to control their bodies while dancing. Lyrical Ballet also welcomes the use of emotions and body language while dancing. Taking a ballet class once a week in conjunction with this class is suggested.

Tap 1: Ages 6-8

This class is designed to be a beginning-level class where the dancer will learn the basic principles and fundamentals of Tap. The class' focus is built upon coordination, rhythms, and syncopation with an emphasis on musicality and self-expression.

Tap 2: Ages 9+

This class is designed to be an intermediate-level class where the dancer will expand upon the basic principles and fundamentals of Tap. The class' focus is built upon coordination, rhythms, and syncopation with an emphasis on musicality and self-expression.

Beginning Teen/Adult Ballet: Ages 13+

Designed for teens and adults who are beginners or have some past experience, this moderate yet challenging ballet class focuses on ballet basics and developing strength. This class will include barre and center with adagio, pirouette, and allegro combinations.

Ballet/Hip-Hop Combo: Ages 4 - 6

This class is designed to introduce your child to a variety of dance styles and techniques. This class will increase your child's dancing ability in ballet and hip-hop to cultivate a versatile performer and prepare them for the next step to individual classes.

Classical Ballet: To learn the language of dance, work on refining basic locomotive skills, and encourage self-expression through movement.

Hip-Hop: To learn basic coordination skills and work on putting combinations to different rhythms of music.

Ballet/Tap Combo: Ages 4 - 6

This class is designed to introduce your child to a variety of dance styles and techniques. This class will increase your child's dancing ability in ballet and tap to cultivate a versatile performer and prepare them for the next step to individual classes.
